COYOTE tells the inspiring true story of legendary American sailor Mike Plant, who came into the national spotlight in the late 80s and early 90s for his solo trips around the world. From the outset, it was crucial that the artwork not only encapsulate the spirit of the single-handed yachtsman, but also capture the look of the time period. Utilizing two images by legendary sailing photographer Billy Black, the key art features Plant’s wild blue eyes as they hover over the deep blue sea and peer out at the viewer. Below that, Mike takes the wheel of his sailing yacht (aptly named Coyote) as it sets off into the great beyond. Hand-painted ocean waves and sprays splash across the poster to enhance the kinetic energy and restless soul of Mike’s personality, as well as capture the brutal and often tenacious oceans he sailed. Rounding out the design, Avant Garde Gothic by International Typeface Corporation was used for the title treatment and additional supporting copy. The font family that was big in the 80s and 90s and felt like the perfect complement to the design.
